A Complex and Demanding Environment with Diverse User Groups
At Stanford University, Northland partnered closely with the Stanford IT and Security operations groups to provide a world class access control system that meets the needs of students, staff and professors. The environment was challenging as the campus hosts everything from public lectures, K-12 student camps and sporting events, to classes and world class research. The nature of a university environment also means the needs for facility access changes on a daily basis. Although difficult, the technical and operational challenges at Stanford were interesting and fun to overcome.
At Stanford, Northland also provided custom solutions to integrate Lenel software with a number of other campus-wide applications, including dining, human resources and student residency. We believe that many physical security system applications are under-utilized. At Stanford and at our other clients, we successfully sought to optimize the use of the application features and their integration to other systems in order to maximize the value of the investment.
Over the past few years we have installed over a thousand wired and wireless card readers at Stanford. However, we are much more proud of the fact that we have worked closely with their operational and technical departments to achieve a foundation on which the long-term security needs of Stanford can be achieved.
The Critical Backbone of Our High-Tech Clients
Northland has been involved in the successful design-build of over 15 data centers around the world. We work with the design and construction teams to develop a full scope, construction drawings and project budgets. We identify the best possible local service provider to ensure we meet the scope of work requirements on time. We collaborate closely with the construction team and the ultimate end user to ensure that not only the specifications are met but also the intent of the client is achieved.
Our data center designs have included multiple layers of perimeter security including thermal cameras, intelligent video, people tracking, credential exchange, license plate recognition, high definition cameras, access control and biometrics. These systems are fully integrated to ensure the security operations team receives information quickly and clearly to enable an appropriate response.
Some of the data centers in which we were involved included physical security information management applications to correlate disparate pieces of information, and automatically generate an action plan for response. Data centers are considered critical infrastructure for our high-technology clients; the systems we install and support are resilient and highly available 24 hours a day.
Global Security Operation Centers
The Vital Center of a Successful Enterprise Security System
Northland is at the forefront for the design-build of world-class global security operation centers (GSOCs). We have built such centers for Apple, eBay and Google, as well as advised other entities on their approach in the design and construction of their GSOCs. Interestingly, in some cases, we have even led the interior design team on the look and feel of the GSOCs. The recognition we received for our designs led to one organization’s IT department to have Northland design its network operations center (NOC). We as a physical security integrator are quite proud of this achievement.
Our GSOCs have included the provision of the network backbone, video controllers, video walls, furniture ergonomics, coordination of the standard operating procedures, and a wide array of software applications, culminating in a fully deployed physical security information management (PSIM) system.
Physical Security Standards
Fundamental to the Long-Term Success of Enterprise Security
We have a number of world-class clients who often seek to begin work with us immediately. However, prior to embarking on any work, Northland will work closely with the prospective client to ensure they have a clear, comprehensive global security standard that can be communicated across the world and understood by any local operations team or security provider. Once a global security standard is approved and adopted, we are able to provide a complete set of construction documents, itemized bill of materials and budgets in very little time. We firmly believe that by setting standards at the outset, a company will save money in the long run and gain valuable business information from a consistent global security platform.
In reality, the large proportion of corporate physical security deployments involve offices around the world that only need 4 to 20 card readers and cameras. Although cookie-cutter, these projects must be delivered on time and to the client standard to ensure full integration with the enterprise platform. Small projects built to standard across the globe do matter. A properly functioning, but non-standard device in a sales office in Buenos Aires can have an adverse ripple effect across the enterprise system. Over a period of a few years, the buildup of non-standard devices will multiply across the organization and become extremely difficult to rectify after the fact. As far as our clients’ customers are concerned the correct operation of a single reader in Budapest, Beijing, or Bangalore is just as important as the systems installation of a large data center. The small things do matter.
As much as we like large, complex and difficult-to-install projects, we pride ourselves in our ability to do the small things right every time. We have successfully installed thousands of projects across 50 countries on time and to our customers’ satisfaction.
